The Sossusvlei (vlei=pan) is a salt-clay pan surrounded by dunes. In the Nama language Sossus means something like "blind river" and refers to the Tsauchab River, which when in flood seeps away in the desert without reaching the only 50 km far Atlantic above ground. 60,000 years ago the Tsauchab River presumably did flow into the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in the heart of Namibia's Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Africa, and for a good reason! The park is known for its striking red sand dunes, unique wildlife, and vast desert landscapes. Before I visited, however, there was so much that I didn't understand.

The wind has picked up, just as I begin to climb Dune 45, here at Sossusvlei. The uphill hike was already going to be relatively tough but this is making it even harder. It's all this damn sand! Each step you make up a sand dune has its own small struggle, as your foot sinks down into the sand and you have to pull it back out to tread forward.

On the drive to Sossusvlei visitors will pass the fascinatingly shaped Dune 45. It owes its name to the fact that it is 45 kilometers from the park entrance gate at Sesriem. The fact that the dune is approximately 170 meters tall and the collection picturesque dry trees scattered around the dune make it the most photographed dune in the world.
